ErieCanal2025

ErieCanal2025 is an collaboration of the Old Mentz Heritage Center and our friends at the Old Brutus Historical Society in Weedsport, the Jordan Historical Society and Museum, the Liz and Dave Erie Canal Park in Camillus, the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, and the Canal Society of New York State, whose headquarters is located in Port Byron.

On October 26, 2025, the Erie Canal will officially celebrate 200 years since the grand opening of the canal between Albany and Buffalo. On that date, a chain of cannons from Buffalo to New York City announced that the flotilla of canal boats had departed Buffalo and were heading to New York City for the “wedding of the waters,” when Governor Clinton would pour water from Lake Erie into the Atlantic Ocean.

Over the course of the next two years, our local organizations will offer talks, programs and events to help celebrate this momentous event. Be on the lookout for information by checking this page and subscribing to our partners websites and social media pages.

Here are the events for March to June 2024

Join the fun and hunt for clues to discover over 200 years of Erie Canal history.

Did you know that the original Erie Canal (“Clinton’s Ditch”) was only 4 feet deep and 40 feet wide for boats to travel? It was dug by hand and many of the early remains can still be found right in your own neighborhood. The first section of the original 363-mile Erie Canal to open in 1820 was the Middle Section that spanned Rome, Syracuse, Camillus, Jordan, Weedsport, Port Byron and Montezuma.
